The Distinctions of Earth Regenerators

Distinctions give us the world. They give us not only what we see, but what we can see. Without our ability to distinguish we can’t see either the forest or the trees. Those familiar with the work of Werner Erhard (see World That Works) or the Landmark Forum will recognize how critical distinctions are in transforming the way we see the world — and in this case, what we see in the world. A simple example would be the way we see a watershed on a map; without the distinction “watershed” everything may look like meandering streams.

Every scientific or academic discipline is created through an elaborate system of distinctions. You know you’re a lawyer when you know how to speak legalese or a mathematician if numeric equations make sense to you. Like any other community or well-developed body of knowledge, Earth Regenerators has its unique lingo, which is to say that it has a body of distinctions. Beyond understanding how to navigate the platform, it’s important to give newcomers a sense of the conversation that Earth Regenerators is. For we are a conversation, as much as a community, organism, and (at least in part) an organization.

Collapse

Western Civilization, which has now taken over the world, is in the process of accelerating collapse. It has exceeded seven of nine planetary boundaries and is in overshoot, which is the ecological prelude to collapse. Like most civilizations in decline, we are not aware on an everyday basis of what is happening.  Apart from ignorance and denial, we simply lack the distinction, perhaps most widely conveyed by Jared Diamond. But the right kind of “collapse awareness” can ultimately lead to peace, resilience, and concerted action, and perhaps even “apocaloptimism.”

Connection to the Earth and all species

At one level this is obvious, but more deeply it is to recognize that we are nature, inseparable from Mother Earth, and what we do to her and to our non-human brothers and sisters we also are doing to ourselves.
